Here’s a video that records a sailing journey from Newport Beach, California, to Hawaii by a lone sailor aboard a small trimaran dubbed the Free Spirit. The sailor, Dale Bowman, explains he had previously circumnavigated the Baja Peninsula from the Sea of Cortez to Newport Beach and at age 66 yearned for a bigger journey and decided to head for Hawaii.
Along the way he had to navigate two approaching hurricanes. The video concludes with a very different view of Diamond Head than most people picture.
Tangent: This one video caught my eye at the start as the trimaran sails through Newport Harbor. My parents grew up in Newport Beach, where my grandfather was the city’s first city manager, and this was a magic land I visited many summers as a kid, with views I remember clearly.
